Hydraulic fracturing is a technique applied after drilling to increase a well’s productivity, especially in low-permeability rocks like shale. The process involves injecting a mixture of water, proppant (sand or ceramic beads), and chemicals at high pressure into the targeted sections of the well. This creates new fractures or enlarges existing ones in the rock formation. The sand in the fluid remains in the cracks to "prop" them open, so when the pressure is released, hydrocarbons can flow through these channels into the well. Fracking is usually done in multiple stages along a horizontal wellbore and is largely responsible for unlocking vast shale oil and gas reserves. While very effective economically, it requires substantial water and can raise environmental and regulatory concerns.
